New Solent Maritime Board created

A new Solent Maritime Board is being created to focus investment and align resources on the priorities for growth in the Solent maritime economy. It is formed by merging the Solent Maritime task group under Business Solent with the South Coast Maritime Board hosted by Marine South East.

The new integrated Solent Maritime Board will support the development of maritime business in the wider Solent area. Its scope will extend from ports and logistics through to manufacturing and services.

The principal objectives of the Board will be:

* To identify opportunities for growth in the Solent maritime sector
* To assist with the development of those opportunities
* To promote the Solent area as a world-class centre for maritime business

Delivery of these three objectives will require the Board to be proactive in scanning the business environment and involving local businesses, as well as being effective in reacting quickly and constructively to government and EU opportunities as they arise. As well as supporting continued investment in growing the Solent's existing maritime capability, the Board will seek to enable diversification into new growth markets such as offshore & marine renewable energy, and maritime information services.

The Board will maintain and publish a strategic overview of maritime business in the Solent region, and support its development through the implementation of a three year strategic plan, with progress reviewed annually. Activities and projects to implement the strategic plan will be facilitated by Business Solent and Marine South East, and draw on the expertise of both organisations, with the support and guidance of individual members of the Board.
