European Wind of the Coast project launched

A new 'Wind of the Coast' (WICO) European project has been launched with partners from the UK, Italy and Spain looking at the use of small scale wind energy systems to harness wind power from around our coasts. The project is part of the European Union inter-regional program; Interreg IVC Power Program aimed at lowering carbon economies.

The project is being led by the Province of Ravenna in Italy together with partners Marine South East from the UK and the Diputacion Provincial de Huelva in Andalucia in Spain. The project will run until September 2011 and has attracted funding of over Euro200,000.

The aim of the project is to enable the installation of small wind systems along coastlines by identifying barriers to their use and producing tools and guidelines to overcome these barriers.

The first phase of the project, which is underway, will acquire the data necessary to decide which design of wind turbines are most suited to coastal wind conditions in order that prototypes can be installed for performance evaluation in further phases of the project.
