Doug Morrison, Port Director, Associated British Ports Southampton has taken on the ambitious goal of helping to raised over £100,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in Southampton. Doug has been named as Chairman of JDRF’s flagship fundraising event the 2007 South Coast Walk to Cure Diabetes.

The 5 mile family walk takes place on Sunday 16th September at Itchen Valley Country Park and Doug has launched an appeal to all Southampton Port based companies to get involved. At a recent Breakfast Meeting hosted by ABP at their newly refurbished City Cruise Terminal Doug called on local companies to join ABP in getting employees involved with the event.

Doug said “finding a cure for type 1 diabetes has been a cause close to all of our hearts at ABP Southampton and I feel deeply honoured to be leading the 2007 South Coast Walk to Cure Diabetes as it makes such a huge difference to the millions of people in the world living with type 1 diabetes. Last year thirty of our employees walked and raised more than £3,000 for JDRF. This year ABP is hoping to have a team of 200 walkers and raise much more. We have already committed £8,000 towards becoming a corporate sponsor of the event and we are calling on all Port based companies to do what they can to support the event. We have already had commitments from Adstream Towage, APL Ltd, J H Whitaker Tankers Ltd, Lovell International, Red Funnel, Southampton Container Terminals, Testbank Ship Repair, Usborne Fertiliser Ltd and Williams Shipping”.

The day of the walk is a fun packed day of fun for all the family. Entertainment is laid on for all participants including bouncy castles, face painting, clowns, jugglers, music and refreshments for all. To find out more about how to get your company involved please contact the JDRF staff on 02380 586269 or visit http://www.jdrf.org.uk/walk.
