Access to funding for marine companies

SEEDA logo

SEEDA has recently put together a report looking at the different funding sources available to companies in the region looking to develop technology. SEEDA has funded a number of “Knowledge Networks” (KNs) to increase activity in areas such as technology exchange between academia and industry.

At an early stage in the process it was recognised that an important issue was the availability of funding for projects. The Knowledge Network Programme was not the vehicle to provide this funding but was able to help identify the funding options available.

The level of potential public-sector funding is much higher than most would anticipate. There are schemes that range from the smallest interventions for £5000 up to multi-million pound schemes. However, the goal of a clear funding escalator is still some way distant as all of these sources are disparate and there is only a limited degree of coordination between them.

This report provides information about the options, the amounts available and the timescales for public sector funding. It is anticipated the report will be of use to the KNs, general industry, business support services and could be of great use to many start up companies and those located in business incubators such as SEEDA's Enterprise Hubs.

There are many different ways to categorise the types of funding available. The method chosen has six easily understood headings:

• Free money
• Loans
• Equity
• Projects, Programmes & Grants
• Working with Universities
• International Opportunities
