Bumper month for Marenet events

Marenet logo

September sees another bumper month of Marenet events. The first of two Marine South East-hosted Marenet events in September is being held on the 4th September at Portsmouth’s historic dockyard and will focus on ‘Life after the carrier and dockyard decision; with invited speakers including Tony Belisario Managing Director of VT Shipbuilding and Paul Karas from Fleet Support Ltd.

Giving an overview of the wider marine cluster and how Portsmouth City Council supports its activities, will be Barbara Thompson, Strategic Director for Economy, Culture and Community Safety at the Council. This event is now fully subscribed, but copies of presentations will be available on our website after the 4th.

The event comes hot on the heels of the decision to keep Portsmouth Naval Base open and also the announcement of the go-ahead to build two new supercarriers in Portsmouth. The giant aircraft carriers will be part-built in Portsmouth and the expectation is that they will be based there too as Portsmouth is the only base big enough to take them. Designing and building the new ships is expected to create or sustain 10,000 jobs nationwide.

The second MareNet event in September, being held during the Southampton Boat Show, is looking at innovationand collaboration with the University of Southampton. The event will focus on recent marine collaborations with the University of Southampton and will include Ian Campbell from the University of Southampton’s Wolfson Unit showcasing their work on the Luna Rossa Challenge for the America’s Cup; James Grazebrook, Managing Director of Halyard Ltd talking about their collaboration with the University’s Institute of Sound and Vibration Research to reduce noise emissions in boats. Professor Ajit Shenoi will take a look at the marine sector from the knowledge economy perspective and the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Philip Nelson, will give an overview of the university’s marine capabilities.

We also have Marenet events lined up for October, November and December.

October - Marenet marine skills and recruitment lunch at the Manufacturing, Engineering and Marine Skills Festival, Wednesday 17th October at the Hampshire Rose Bowl. The focus of this event will be marine sector links with schools, recruitment into the marine industry and taking on an apprenticeship, including an apprenticeship case study. There will also be an opportunity for companies to look around the Festival, which includes 50 marine and engineering companies exhibiting and an expected 2000 young people attending.

November – with the date and venue yet to be confirmed November will see a Marenet event focusing on the results of the SEEDA waterfront strategy. This will be your first opportunity to learn about the issues and factors affecting waterfront development in terms of the marine industry and SEEDA’s proposals for a waterfront strategy.

December will see another two Marenet events, the first a speed dating and networking event on the Isle of Wight and the second a Kent based event looking at marine sector issues affecting marine businesses in Kent. Dates and venues for both these events are being finalised at the moment and will be detailed in the October email newsletter as well as on the Marine South East website.
