Partnership launches health and safety campaign to boost awareness

Solutions – The Training and Skills Partnership is launching a campaign to help raise awareness of health and safety issues in the workplace. The campaign also looks at how, with the right training, many businesses can profit from improvements to health and safety measures.

To kick-start the campaign Solutions has issued a mini–guide to health and safety training to businesses across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The guide highlights why health and safety is good for business. It offers a range of courses and services to help local businesses comply with government regulations and make health and safety improvements.

Advisors at Solutions are also on hand to offer information to employers on the training their staff may benefit from. Anna Wood, Project Director at Solutions – The Training and Skills Partnership, launched the campaign today saying;

“Effective health and safety must be a priority for all businesses, regardless of their size and industry sector. As well as helping employers to comply with legal requirements, cost effective health and safety training will benefit a business by improving its performance, saving money, and reducing the significant cost and disruption that accidents and ill health can bring.

“Today we are calling on all businesses to review their health and safety training. For example, how would you deal with a first aid emergency – are your people equipped? How are you managing noise – it’s a real risk and damage to hearing by noise is permanent and can be costly to an employer if a claim is upheld in court. Did you know that legislation even applies to simple things like climbing ladders?

“At Solutions we offer a free advisory service to all businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight which works with employers to identify their training requirements, and then find the right course, training provider and location to suit their needs.”

In the UK, during 2005/2006:
• 2 million people suffered from an illness they believed was caused or made worse by their work.
• 212 workers were killed at work and 328,000 reportable injuries occurred.
• 30 million days were lost overall, 24 million due to work-related ill health and 6 million due to workplace injury.
• 1012 offences were prosecuted by the Health & Safety Executive and a further 332 offences were prosecuted by the local authorities.
• The average penalty per conviction in 2005/2006 was £29,997.

For further information on health and safety courses or to discuss your other training needs please contact an advisor at Solutions - The Training and Skills Partnership, on telephone 023 8065 2588 or visit http://www.solutionstrainingpartnership.com

Solutions is funded by the Learning & Skills Council for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and the European Social Fund. Solutions is a unique partnership between nine leading training providers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It is designed to put affordable, crucial training services within reach of all businesses, whatever their size, sector or budget.

Kent focus

Dover seasports

Focus on Dover projects

The Dover Sea Sports Development Trust has started work to build the ‘Dover Sea Sports Centre’ situated on the beach. The building will provide a control centre for water-based activities and a social meeting place to allow the organisations as a whole to benefit from the improved venue. On the upper floor there will be catering and public areas for social activity together with changing rooms and storage facilities; boathouses and lecture rooms are housed at beach level.

The Trust has the support of a wide range of organisations and local authorities which have recognised the benefits which this development could bring to Dover. For sport it offers the facility to attract, retain and train people from a wide range of backgrounds on an inclusive basis. In education it reaches out to young and old, able-bodied and disabled to provide new skills and to develop talent.

The Dover Sea Sports Development Trust which is building the new centre on Dover beach also runs the Dover Regatta. This year’s event took place on 11 and 12 August and succeeded in drawing thousands of people to the waterfront. Along with the extensive range of competitions in and on the water including swimming, sailing, dragon boating, rowing and power boating, there were French and Latin markets and other attractions to provide family entertainment.

Thousands of visitors packed the prom for the extravaganza of events, from a programme of displays and races in and above the harbour to fun on and around the beach area.

If you would like to find out more about any of the Kent events and facilities contact Marine South East’s Kent advisor Richard Barron by emailing richard@marinesoutheast.co.uk. Alternatively call him on 07882 007811.

Dover harbour

Investment the key to East Kent marine industry success

Traditionally coastal areas such as Southampton have dominated the marine scene, but more and more marine businesses in east Kent are taking advantage of the area’s wealth of existing and upcoming opportunities.

The East Kent Marine Project’s objective is to encourage east Kent to capitalise on these opportunities, by leading business projects designed to encourage joined-up thinking between local marine companies.

Marine South East and East Kent Marine Partnership project manager, Richard Barron, is passionate about how to drive this forward: ‘‘we need to create a community of marine businesses able to support each other in the process of producing competitive services to an international market. ‘By raising the profile of the marine industry in east Kent, we can not only attract inward investment but also ensure that we get the support we need to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to us.’

So what exactly does Kent have to offer? For a start, providing first class services and products to the international market requires a highly developed infrastructure. Kent’s international airport deals with over 50,000 tonnes of freight a year and its Channel Tunnel rail link constitutes the fastest route to the continent.

Dover Port, the leading ferry terminal in the UK, deals with a vast range of goods and services every year, and busy harbours and marinas in Ramsgate, Dover and Folkestone service fishermen and international yachtsman alike, forming a huge part of coastal life.

The East Kent Partnership is supporting this budding area of business. The area is already seeing a growing network for marine businesses, from services ranging from leisure marine, commercial and offshore marine equipment, ports and shipping, marine services and contracting, ship building and repair, trade associations, research, education and training.

With growing confidence in the sector, there has been significant investment already in projects such as the Dover Western Docks Development. This development will cater for the predicted increase in traffic going to and from Europe.

The Dover Harbour Board’s 30 year plan and £420m of investment will see new ferry berths develop the current dock. In addition to this literal expansion, the project is making provision for a new sports centre and a new marina, which will impact on local marine companies by presenting all kinds of opportunities for new and existing businesses. Investment in east Kent’s development, as well as future projects in trade and commerce, is also attracting further business.

Larger scale projects such as the London Array wind farm, which involves almost £2b of investment into the building and development of 270 turbines over 152 square miles offshore in the Greater Thames Estuary, is already presenting opportunities due to its proximity to nearby ports for construction, operation and maintenance.

With the right support, East Kent has great potential for attracting huge inward investment. The area has a wealth of assets, including location to mainland Europe, proximity to the capital, growing infrastructure, and quality of living for the industry’s employees. The area undeniably has real potential for businesses to tap into. With confidence growing, projects like the East Kent Marine project are leading the way for the future.

Innovation & Funding

EDSnet logo

EDSnet 'EMSAC' project takes an important step forward.

Marine South East has received encouraging news from the EC Research Directorate-General about the recent bid for funding the 'European Marine Science Applications Consortium' project (EMSAC).

The MSE coordinated proposal has passed an initial evaluation as part of the process to select 70 projects aimed at fostering improved co-operation between marine science and the private sector.

The evaluators praised the high quality of the proposal's objectives, stating that the project would be 'an important step forward, and will fill a real gap, bringing together industry and the research community' and should receive support. EMSAC now goes forward with the other 329 proposals from across Europe that have passed the initial evaluation for final selection. There are more hurdles to clear and a good deal of competition but EMSAC is off to a very good start.

The EMSAC proposal seeks to establish a framework for long-term collaboration and investment involving key marine industries and the marine science base. This project will encourage the marine science community and the private sector to find areas of synergy where common initiatives can be developed, focusing particularly on major industrial sectors whose activities require marine scientific knowledge and capability.

The Research Institutions in the consortium are some of the best in Europe. Most of the UK partners are members of EDSnet (Environmental Decision Support Network. EDSnet is a Knowledge Network facilitated by Marine South East and supported by SEEDA's Knowledge Network Programme.
If you would like to find out more about EDSnet contact Simon Powell by emailing simon@marinesoutheast.co.uk or log on to

SEEDA logo

Access to funding for marine companies

SEEDA has recently put together a report looking at the different funding sources available to companies in the region looking to develop technology. SEEDA has funded a number of “Knowledge Networks” (KNs) to increase activity in areas such as technology exchange between academia and industry.

At an early stage in the process it was recognised that an important issue was the availability of funding for projects. The Knowledge Network Programme was not the vehicle to provide this funding but was able to help identify the funding options available.

The level of potential public-sector funding is much higher than most would anticipate. There are schemes that range from the smallest interventions for £5000 up to multi-million pound schemes. However, the goal of a clear funding escalator is still some way distant as all of these sources are disparate and there is only a limited degree of coordination between them.

This report provides information about the options, the amounts available and the timescales for public sector funding. It is anticipated the report will be of use to the KNs, general industry, business support services and could be of great use to many start up companies and those located in business incubators such as SEEDA's Enterprise Hubs.

There are many different ways to categorise the types of funding available. The method chosen has six easily understood headings:

• Free money
• Loans
• Equity
• Projects, Programmes & Grants
• Working with Universities
• International Opportunities

REA logo

Renewable Energy Association WATTS 2007 Wave & Tidal Technology Symposium, 4th September 2007

Venue: Northwood House, Cowes, Isle of Wight

The significance of Europe's commitment to meet 20% of its total energy needs from renewables by 2020 cannot be overstated. A 20% energy commitment probably entails a 30% contribution from electricity. The timescale for delivery, coupled with the UK's prime share of Europe's wave and tidal resource, bodes well for this emerging industry - in all its forms!

A main theme of this conference will be considering what contribution wave energy, tidal stream, tidal barrages and lagoons could make to this ambitious new European target. It will set out the policies needed to move the industry form the R& D stage to large scale commercial deployment.

It will assess the progress made by the UK's renewable device developers elsewhere, and contrast our support measures with those abroad. The focus on the climate change agenda can tend to overshadow other benefits of a move to renewable energy - benefits the marine renewables have in spades - such as its contribution to energy security, the unique level of predictability and the massive range of scale in potential applications, spanning kWs to Gigawatts.

This conference will be the first WATTs to debate properly tidal barrages and lagoons. Some see this technology as threatening to other marine renewables - but is this the case? Does the level of concern over the environment justify a repositioning of environmental priorities, of global climate change and conservation?

As well as these high level debates, there will be sessions on deployment, operation and maintenance and case studies describing experiences with operational marine energy devices.

For further information contact REA on Tel: 020 7747 1830 or email info@r-e-a.net

The Supplier’s Conference for the United Kingdom’s CVF Programme, Thursday 25 October 2007

Venue: Marriott City centre Hotel, Bristol

With the completion of the Assessment Phase for the replacement programme for the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers, the UK government has recently confirmed that the two new aircraft carriers, each displacing 65,000 tons, will now be built under the CVF programme.

This programme will be managed by the CVF Alliance that brings together the Ministry of Defence teams with those of BAE Systems, VT Group, Babcock International Group, KBR and Thales UK.

Although many important procurement decisions have been taken during the extended Assessment Phase of the programme, and some contracts have been placed, a significant amount of business remains to be established with second and third tier sub-contractors.

As part of a parallel international framework involving cooperation with France on its PA2 carrier programme, French naval and maritime industries are encouraged to bid for the supply of equipment and systems on the CVF programme.

The Cut-off date for receipt of all applications is Friday 12 October 2007. For further information contact Clementina Upton on 020 7928 9199 or email events@maritimeindustries.org

European Inland Waterways and Ports Forum, 27-28 November 2007

Venue: Crowne Plaza Hotel, Amsterdam

Explosive growth of trade volumes in Europe's seaports has created capacity problems – which is why the focus is now on inland port and waterway development
That's why Lloyd’s Register–Fairplay's Maritime Events Division (MED) is organising the first European Inland Waterways and Ports Forum.

Increased use of inland waterways to move freight cost-effectively and simultaneously curb emissions and reduce congestion is a policy actively pursued by the EU. Europe has a network of 35,000km of rivers and canals, carrying nearly 500M tonnes of freight annually – and huge investments are planned across the continent to expand and improve inland waterways, ports and terminals that will affect shipping lines, shippers, forwarders and intermodal operators.

Forum sessions will cover:
* European Overview, including present EU projects
* Ports and Inland Waterways
* Using Inland Waterways Today
* Environment and Economics.

Organisations that have already confirmed presentations include the European Commission, European Investment Bank, CEDA, Hamburg Port Authority, European Sea Ports Organisation, Black Sea Coastal Association, Via Donau, TEN-T, European Federation of Inland Ports, the Port of Le Havre Inland and Inland Navigation Europe – the latter also sponsoring the event.

For more information and to register, please contact events@lrfairplay.com or Nigel Dickson or Julie Madigan on 01737 379105.

Marintec China 2007, Tuesday 27 November 2007 - Friday 30 November 2007

Venue: Pudong Shanghai, China

Marintec China, Shanghai, is the number one marine exhibition for the Chinese market, attracting the all-important ship design centres, shipbuilding, repair and conversion yards, as well as major Chinese ship-owning companies such as COSCO, who operate one of the worlds’ largest fleets. There are also Chinese marine firms exhibiting who seek technology and innovation from British companies by way of joint ventures and partnerships.

It is an ideal opportunity to get close to the procurement teams of the major yards, as well as to talk to Chinese agents who already represent UK marine firms.

There will be a large presence of procurement personnel from the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), who are now the central procurement body for all the shipyards in Southern China. When attending Marintec, the British companies on the UK Pavilion will find that the Chinese Heads of Procurement are not shy about dropping in for a chat and drink at the BMEA business lounge.
