Robotics and autonomous systems - £5m available from Innovate UK

Businesses can apply for a share of £5 million to develop innovative applications of robotics and autonomous systems, the aim of this competition is to help UK companies explore new robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) opportunities.

Innovate UK and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) are looking for innovators to develop new solutions to existing or emerging problems. Commercially viable RAS solutions often need to combine several different technologies to achieve the required performance. This competition aims to support and speed up this work.

The aim of this competition is to enable UK companies to explore new RAS opportunities. It will enable them to develop capabilities for application in many sectors of the UK economy. The commercial opportunities are clear. We intend to encourage RAS research projects to progress towards them.

Proposals should show how they can speed up the development of RAS technologies towards demonstration and commercialisation. Projects may focus on technical feasibility, industrial research or experimental development.

They expect projects to range in size from total costs of £50,000 to £500,000. Projects should last between 6 and 15 months. You must complete the work and incur, pay and claim for all costs before the end of March 2018.

A business must lead the project. Projects with costs of £100,000 or above must be collaborative.

Deadline for registrations is 19th October 2016 and deadline for full applications is noon on 26th October 2016.

IMarEST bursary to support distance e-learning students globally

An innovative new partnership has been announced between the IMarEST's distance learning arm, MLA, and ABMA Education, an organisation that awards vocational qualifications.

The partnership will work together to increase the career development opportunities for students of shipping and logistics diplomas who aspire to take their education to the next level.

MLA is able to offer Plymouth University degrees in maritime subjects to students studying anywhere in the world, which matches perfectly the existing provision of ABMA Education diplomas in Shipping and Logistics. These courses enable thousands of students in a host of countries to study an industry relevant course to develop their career.

The joint working between ABMA Education and MLA links the two methods of study to provide an additional route of progression for existing students into distance learning higher education. At a time when the maritime industry is desperate for properly qualified personnel, this joint statement of a clear career progression path is extremely good news.

Any students enrolled on these courses will automatically be entitled to complimentary student membership of the IMarEST and all of the benefits of access to information, status and networking which this confers.

MLA is a distance learning company specialising in degree education in hydrography for professionals, sustainable maritime operations and meteorology/oceanography.
It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). MLA is the parent company of the Hydrographic Academy.

Our Total learning platform is a proven, successful and flexible way of bringing the UK's leading maritime university to the workplace. Designed specifically to meet the needs of marine industry employers and individuals, we offer a unique way to study on a part-time basis whilst on-board ship, in the office, or at home.

Through this application students can reach the full suite of learning materials including videos, tutorials, assessments, transcripts and on-line library.

This app allows Marine Learning Alliance students to access and download their teaching and learning materials ensuring they can complete their studies anywhere in the world.

New course launched in response to the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention

A new two-day course has been launched by Warsash Maritime Academy, part of Southampton Solent University, in response to the imminent ratification of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention (2004).

This intensive course will ensure that company and organisation officials are better prepared to implement and monitor the Convention.

The Convention includes an environmental responsibility for the shipping industry, with measures being put in place to avoid pollution through the transfer of non-indigenous species from one area of the world to another through the ship's water ballast. The Ballast Water Management (BWM) course, being delivered by Warsash's maritime training experts is designed to help provide a clear understanding of implementation and monitoring requirements at an early stage.

The Ballast Water Management course will take delegates through the requirements, and provide the knowledge required for planning, implementation and monitoring of the Convention. As enforcement authorities will have a part to play to ensure that the vessels comply with the requirements, the course also provides an overview of the key monitoring and compliance checks to be expected.
In addition, the main principles of the treatment technologies available for installation and use will be outlined, along with the pitfalls of the same. Furthermore, the issues of installation, retrofitting and convention compliance are covered. The course provides an overview of the key foreign legislation and the key differences with the Convention requirements.

The BWM course is aimed for a wide variety of professionals within the maritime industry, those who have positions with shipping management, Ports State Control and flag state administrations. It is highly suitable for superintendents, surveyors, vetting inspectors, terminal operators and managers, legal team and maritime law experts, enforcement agency personnel, environment responsibilities, seafaring officers and engineers.

The first course starts 5th October 2016, full details of the course can be found at the following link:

Interested in robitics and autonomous systems? Come and find out more, 19th September 2016, Southampton

Come and meet with regional robotics networks and the Solent LEP and join in the discussions about robotics and autonomous systems at the NOC Southampton 10th September 2016.

The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) is hosting three events in September where speakers from a selection of LEP's will present their current thoughts and highlight their interests in RAS.

Attendance is open to everyone; SME's, businesses and research organisations are welcome to attend and contribute to the discussion.

LEP representatives will give a brief overview of their current strategy, particularly in how it relates to RAS, and then we will have a Q&A session with a panel to identify synergies and common themes (e.g. agriculture, transport, extreme environments, advanced manufacturing, subsea, etc.).

We'll also be hearing from Innovate UK who will be briefing delegates on the newly released Innovate UK & EPSRC funding for RAS. There's up to £5 million up for grabs in innovation projects to stimulate new partnerships across robotics and autonomous systems (RAS).

Tickets for these free events are limited so come and join us.
