Global Marine Technology Trends 2030 - report available

Global Marine Technology Trends 2030 was released in early September 2015 and is the culmination of a collaborative project between Lloyd's Register, QinetiQ and the University of Southampton. The report is available to interested parties free of charge.

It looks at the future for: commercial shipping - without which world trade would cease; navies - so vital for security; and the health of the oceans - the vital resource for energy, food, minerals and, indeed, life that defines the future well-being of the planet.

The report examines the transformative impact of 18 technologies on ship design, on naval power and on the use of ocean space in 2030 and it highlights three aspects:

* Momentum and capability for a significant evolution in ship design and operation is now building - the report presents design scenarios for commercial ships in 2030.

* By 2030 the fastest and most radical impacts are likely to be felt in the development of naval ships and systems where maritime autonomous systems are driving the biggest revolution in maritime security in over a century.

* Understanding the world's oceans is more essential than ever to secure the future of our planet.

RFA & IMarEST Launch New Maritime Professional Development Programme

A brand new maritime Professional Development Programme has been launched by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) together with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

The programme supports the professional development of engineering, deck and logistic supply professionals and sees the RFA's IMarEST-accredited internal Career Level Framework matched to levels of competence, grades of IMarEST membership and professional qualifications (such as becoming Chartered).

Both seagoing and shore-based staff have been put on a path to obtaining additional professional qualifications (allowing them to work towards becoming a Chartered Marine Engineer or Chartered Marine Technologist). They also have access to the IMarEST's resources including a powerful online virtual library, monthly membership magazine, access to technical events and a growing branch network and meetings.

For further information on how the IMarEST can support professional development in your organisation, please contact david.henderson@imarest.org.

EXPOSURES: Invitation to initial stakeholder workshop, 6th October 2015, Southampton

The new ‘EXPOSURES' project is working to establish a new marine information ecosystem and demonstrate how the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) can be exploited for marine applications.

Through the development and use of advanced underwater IoT infrastructures it will create novel disruptive data value chains. These will be invaluable in helping protect the marine environment and assisting with the sustainable exploitation of the sea's resources.

Focussing initially on seabed monitoring, using autonomous systems EXPOSURES will show how new seabed bathymetric data can be integrated seamlessly with data and models from other sources (e.g. archived survey data) to generate high value information for a wide range of users of coastal waters and seabed resources.

The EXPOSURES pilot infrastructure is already designed, built and deployed at the 'SUNRISE' 'IoT' facility in Porto, Portugal and will be used to undertake a series of live field trials. These will cover two specific applications that have been identified which have significant socio-economic importance to the marine industry (scour around wind turbine foundations); and government agencies (managing erosion and silting). During the project evidence will generated which will contribute directly to the technical and business validation of the EXPOSURES platform.

Although the project will be focussed on the two initial uses, establishment of this innovative technology will enable it to be used across a broad range of marine applications.

To ensure the technology is developed to full effect, the project partners IT Innovation (University of Southampton) and Marine South East are facilitating the EXPOSURES 'Interest Group'. Through this, potential end-users and other interested parties from the marine industry, government agencies and scientific community will be able to learn more about the project. They will be able to engage with the project team and contribute directly to developments maximising applicability, commercial potential and fostering market creation.

Group members will be first to see public project information and will be invited to attend the workshops and networking sessions as the project progresses.

Membership of the Interest Group is free. To join and receive an invitation to the Initial Stakeholder Workshop on the 6th October 2015, please visit
http://www.groupspaces.com/EXPOSURES/

and click on the green 'Join' button.

'EXPOSURES' stands for 'Experimental Testing of Semantically enriched and Fused IOT data streams for the evaluation of marine environmental processes and risks'.

The initial stakeholders workshop will take place on Tuesday, 6th October 2015 in Conference Room 4B, 2 Venture Road, Southampton Science Park, SO16 7QQ

Hybrid Marine Power & Propulsion Conference, 6th-8th October 2015, Poole Lifeboat College

The first international ‘Hybrid Marine Power & Propulsion Conference’ is being held at the RNLI Lifeboat College, Poole UK from 6th to 8th October 2015.

Shock Mitigation is bringing together an international group of experts, armed with the latest knowledge that will identify the potential of utilising hybrid power and innovative propulsion systems for vessels in the sub IMO / sub 24 metre professional sector.

Attendees will include end-user organisations, military, boat owners, operators, boat builders, engine manufacturers, mechanical & electrical engineers and naval architects. Break out sessions will focus on the latest diesel / electric systems for wind farm support vessels, pilot boats, patrol craft, survey vessels, superyacht tenders and unmanned craft. Boat builders in the leisure sector will also benefit from attending.

For engine manufacturers, component suppliers and installers the take away knowledge will be relevant for strategic product development, engineering decisions and business development. Besides highlighting opportunities, including the use of electric drives and lithium ion batteries, the ongoing objective is to create affiliations that share engine data and work cycles for vessels in various sectors.

Hybrid is the 'here and now' technology that is being utilised by many industries around the world. It is now a viable option for the professional maritime sector globally. For commercial, professional and military end user organisations the unique knowledge gained from Hybrid Marine Conference presentations will help to shape long term decisions that lead to improvements of in-service systems and procurement of next generation vessels. The objective is improved fuel saving and efficiency by all means.

Lead sponsor of the Hybrid Marine Power & Propulsion Conference is US lithium ion battery manufacturer XALT Energy.
