The Hour of Power, Hybrid Marine Technology and Green Ports

In 2015 two significant developments are going to make many operators, owners and builders of professional vessels consider hybrid marine power. Firstly the new emissions laws in ports and secondly there is now an incentive for high technology manufacturers to invest in developing highly efficient batteries.

Hybrid is 'here and now' technology that is being utilised by many industries around the world. The marine industry is now recognising the potential of utilising hybrid power and innovative propulsion systems for vessels in the sub IMO / sub 24 metre professional sector.

'The Hour Of Power' has been well received by the marine industry worldwide. This simple concept enables vessels to run in and out of port for an hour on electric with battery power - then carry out their open sea work on diesel power. The aim of this innovative hybrid solution is to enhance conventional propulsion systems. Vessels can reduce emissions and improve fuel consumption whilst extending engine maintenance periods and engine life.

This is not just green energy for the sake of it - 'The Hour Of Power' focuses on hybrid solutions linked to viable business cases. For commercial and professional organisations the concept of running vessels with zero emissions at up to 10 knots for one hour will shape decisions that lead to improvements of in-service systems and procurement of next generation vessels. The overall objective is fuel saving and improved efficiency by all means.

For the marine industry to move forward it needs to utilise expertise from aviation and other sectors to drive this innovation and support relevant safety standards. Automotive manufacturers in Europe, the Far East and the US have recognised that hybrid technologies such as PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) utilising lithium ion batteries will be dominant for the next decade. Reducing emissions from busses and trucks in the world's major cities has been a major driver for lithium ion battery power storage. The need for self sufficient land based grid applications has further extended the capabilities of next generation battery and hybrid technology.

There are two main types of hybrid system. A serial hybrid is where the engine only powers a generator, and is not mechanically connected to the propeller shaft. A parallel hybrid is where the engine is mechanically connected along with an electric 'machine' that can operate as both propulsion motor and generator.

Certain sectors are potentially well suited to hybrid diesel / electric systems. These include wind farm service vessels and pilot boats that have relatively consistent duty cycles. We are entering a period of rapid change and commercial opportunity in the hybrid marine market. End-user organisations, boat builders, engine manufacturers and naval architects are now investigating systems for survey vessels, superyacht tenders, patrol vessels and unmanned craft.

The Hybrid Marine Power & Propulsion Conference will take place at the Lifeboat College Poole UK - 6th to 8th October 2015.

This unique event brings together an international group of experts, to identify the potential of utilising hybrid power and propulsion systems for vessels in the sub IMO / sub 24 metre sector.

Attendees will include professional, commercial and military end-users, boat operators, boat builders, engine manufacturers, mechanical & electrical engineers and naval architects.

Isle of Wight Expansion Fund from the Solent LEP

Grants of between £100,000-£500,000 are available to support businesses based on or moving to the Isle of Wight for projects that create or safeguard jobs.

Funding is available for private sector enterprises to start up new activities, expand or diversify. A total of £2.46 million is available to businesses either based on, or moving to, the Isle of Wight. Businesses in any sector can apply for funding, however the LEP is particularly keen to encourage applications from businesses operating in marine, maritime, advanced manufacturing, composites engineering, low carbon and the visitor economy.

Bids can be in the range of £100,000 - £500,000, and for state aid purposes, the amount requested from the Fund must constitute no more than 20% of the total project value. The aim of the fund is to unlock private sector investment thereby creating or safeguarding sustainable private sector employment. Funding is allocated on a competitive basis and those projects which leverage the most private sector investment and create and/or safeguard the most jobs will be successful.

Following huge interest, the first beneficiary of the fund has been confirmed as long established Isle of Wight business, Cheetah Marine.

The Island Marine Manufacturers have been awarded £160,000 from the fund to establish a new LEAN manufacturing production line; allowing the company to develop and optimise export markets around the world from the Island through innovative new technology. The Expansion Fund award has resulted in an additional £640,000 private sector investment in the project and will lead to the safeguarding of 27 existing and creation of 18 new jobs.

EXPOSURES: Invitation to initial stakeholder workshop, 6th October 2015, Southampton

The new ‘EXPOSURES' project is working to establish a new marine information ecosystem and demonstrate how the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) can be exploited for marine applications.

Through the development and use of advanced underwater IoT infrastructures it will create novel disruptive data value chains. These will be invaluable in helping protect the marine environment and assisting with the sustainable exploitation of the sea's resources.

Focussing initially on seabed monitoring, using autonomous systems EXPOSURES will show how new seabed bathymetric data can be integrated seamlessly with data and models from other sources (e.g. archived survey data) to generate high value information for a wide range of users of coastal waters and seabed resources.

The EXPOSURES pilot infrastructure is already designed, built and deployed at the 'SUNRISE' 'IoT' facility in Porto, Portugal and will be used to undertake a series of live field trials. These will cover two specific applications that have been identified which have significant socio-economic importance to the marine industry (scour around wind turbine foundations); and government agencies (managing erosion and silting). During the project evidence will generated which will contribute directly to the technical and business validation of the EXPOSURES platform.

Although the project will be focussed on the two initial uses, establishment of this innovative technology will enable it to be used across a broad range of marine applications.

To ensure the technology is developed to full effect, the project partners IT Innovation (University of Southampton) and Marine South East are facilitating the EXPOSURES 'Interest Group'. Through this, potential end-users and other interested parties from the marine industry, government agencies and scientific community will be able to learn more about the project. They will be able to engage with the project team and contribute directly to developments maximising applicability, commercial potential and fostering market creation.

Group members will be first to see public project information and will be invited to attend the workshops and networking sessions as the project progresses.

Membership of the Interest Group is free. To join and receive an invitation to the Initial Stakeholder Workshop on the 6th October 2015, please visit
http://www.groupspaces.com/EXPOSURES/

and click on the green 'Join' button.

'EXPOSURES' stands for 'Experimental Testing of Semantically enriched and Fused IOT data streams for the evaluation of marine environmental processes and risks'.

The initial stakeholders workshop will take place on Tuesday, 6th October 2015 in Conference Room 4B, 2 Venture Road, Southampton Science Park, SO16 7QQ
