Marine South East colleagues awarded MBEs in Queen's Birthday Honours list

We are delighted to announce that two figures closely associated with Marine South East, Iain Shepherd and Professor Gwyn Griffiths, have been awarded MBE's for their services to the marine sector in the recent Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Iain Shepherd has been awarded the MBE for his services to the marine sector and economy in Chichester, West Sussex.

Iain was instrumental in the formation of Marine South East and has been a long-term chairman of the organisation and closely involved with its development and activities over many years. He currently manages the marine and defence consultancy MARCOM Defence, offering a wide range of services and equipment in the Naval and Commercial marine sectors.

Iain is extremely active in various Maritime Industry Forums as well as being an EU Ambassador of the Sea and member of NOC Advisory Council. Within Sussex Iain has been a long-term member of the Chichester Chamber of Commerce as well as Director of the Coast to Capital LEP and recent Chairman of the Coastal West Sussex Partnership.

Professor Gwyn Griffiths has received a MBE for his services to marine science. Professor Griffiths retired from NERC in 2012 after a distinguished 36-year career as an ocean engineer with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton. He remains an active world-leading authority in the field of ocean technology.

Professor Griffiths is an expert in the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for marine science; he is the founder of Autonomous Analytics and works as an Associate Partner with Marine South East on a number of projects.

Marine South East warmly congratulates both Iain and Gwyn on the recognition of their services to the marine sector.

Final Rampion Meet the Buyer event to be held early 2016

E.ON has decided to hold the final O&M (Offshore & Maintenance) Meet the Buyer event for the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, the last of the series, in the first quarter of 2016.

The reason for the delay in this event is to offer the greatest opportunities for local suppliers of support service contracts for the operational phase of the project, which will not be tendered until 2016.

Innovate UK announces the 7 successful Vessel Efficiency II projects to be funded

In light of the assessment by the International Maritime Organisation that carbon emissions from international maritime shipping make up 2.2% of the global total, and left unchecked could increase by as much as 250% in the period to 2050, it’s timely that Innovate UK has made public its chosen seven projects to be funded under the second Vessel Efficiency - Better Systems at Sea - competition.

In January 2014 The Vessel Efficiency II - better systems at sea competition offered funding of up to £5 million, with £3m from Innovate UK and £2 million from Dstl, for proposals to reduce emissions and improve efficiency of marine vessels.

Seven projects have recently been announced as being successful in receiving funding. They include:

* Supercritical CO2 Waste Heat Recovery for Marine Gas Turbines - led by Rolls-Royce PLC

* Project IConIC (Intelligent Condition monitoring with Integrated Communications) - led by Gosport based STS Defence

* Small Commercial Vessel Performance Management System - led by Appledore-based Keynvor MorLift Ltd

* VoyagOR - Voyage Optimal Routing in the Cloud - led by Aimes Grid Services

* Marine Exhaust Gas Treatment System (MAGS) - led by Sustainable Maritime Solutions Ltd

* Marine Energy Efficiency, Transformation and Reporting (MEETR) - led by Azurtane Ltd

* Performance and safety monitoring system for workboat fleet operation - led by CJR Propulsion

Earlier this year Innovate UK and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (dstl) offered investment of up to £7.5m in collaborative R&D projects in a third Vessel Efficiency competition, this time to to improve the ways in which energy is managed on ships and other marine and maritime vessels. This competition closed in March 2015.

Winds of Change - meeting the challenges of the offshore wind industry, 10th July 2015, Southampton

SOREC is organising this conference and workshop to explore the challenges of Offshore Wind Energy and the role of SMEs in resolving these. The event is taking place Friday 10th July 2015 10.00 - 4.00pm at the NOC in Southampton.

The challenges facing developers are significant - funding, technology, even PR to name but a few - the industry is growing at a rapid pace and innovative SMEs may have solutions to the issues raised along the way. The emphasis these days is driving down costs coupled with local suppliers.

In addition to networking with other companies and organisations with an interest in offshore wind energy, you will find out about:

* The state of the offshore wind market
* The use of innovative technologies to drive down costs.
* Using Autonomous systems and vehicles to support offshore wind
* Offshore Renewables and the wider Blue Growth Opportunity

The afternoon sessions will consist of round table discussion topics covering:

* Environmental challanges

The Keynote Address will be given by Ian Cambrook from the Navitus Bay Development Ltd. He will be talking about 'The Challenges of Developing a Sustainable Windarm from Concept to Delivery.'

The offshore wind market is maturing rapidly. There are 2 significant offshore wind farms planned locally - Navitus Bay and Rampion - bringing a range of commercial opportunities for compaies across the region.

There will also be an opportunity to tour the NOC's Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems Innovation Centre and to view a C-Enduro demonstration by ASV.
