Well attended Rampion Meet the Buyer event held in Shoreham

Over 140 delegates attended the latest Rampion Meet the Buyer event which was held in Shoreham-by-Sea at the end April.

Marine South East organised the event which was hosted by E.ON and focused on the suppliers of products and services to support the offshore construction and installation of the wind farm.

The third and final Meet the Buyer event of the series will be held in Newhaven, in June/July (date and venue to be confirmed). This event will be targeting those who are interested in supplying products and services specifically to support the Operations and Maintenance function of the wind farm. This could include those companies who can support the construction and fit out of the operations base, due to be built in 2016, as well as service contracts for the base once it is up and running in 2017, and crew transfer vessels to support turbine maintenance.

This final event is aimed at local companies based in Sussex, Kent, Surrey and Hampshire.

Make sure you are registered on the Sussex Wind Energy website http://http://www.sussexwindenergy.org.uk/ in order to receive details of this event.

Upgrade to Rampion procurement web portal

The Rampion procurement portal http://www.sussexwindenergy.org.uk has been upgraded to offer much improved functionality, both to suppliers and contractors.

The procurement categories have been simplified so that supplier capabilities can be more easily registered.

Equally, it is easier for contractors to search for specific capabilities that they need to sub-contract.

At the Rampion Meet the Buyer event held on 29th April it was clear that the majority of suppliers present had not yet registered on the portal. They are encouraged to do so.

It is intended that the portal could also be used by contractors on other offshore windfarm projects in the future.

What is the 'Blue Economy' and resource efficiency?

The ‘blue’ economy represents roughly 5.4 million jobs and generates a gross added value of almost €500 billion a year.

However, further growth is possible and the goal of a European project called REMCAP is to substantially increase the innovation capacity across the EU in maritime resource efficiency, and thereby position European businesses to exploit growing global demand for resource efficient technologies, systems and operations.

All around the globe, Governments are increasingly recognising the social and economic value of the seas: as a source of energy, materials, food and leisure, as well as a transportation corridor. However, the coastal and ocean environment that provides these resources needs careful management to ensure its long-term viability. The capability to exploit marine resources, in ways that are sustainable and cost-effective, is becoming a strategic priority for maritime nations and the EU.

The REMCAP project has been exploring how these vital challenges can best be met.

Marine South East is one of the partners in the EU funded project. The first phase of the project is now complete and the findings can be read in the annual newsletter which can be found at the following link:
http://www.remcap.eu/project_deliverables/

REMCAP is eager to explore opportunities for wider engagement and collaboration with other EU and international maritime clusters and partners to further maximise opportunities for innovation capacity and growth.

As part of this process, the REMCAP project team will disseminate key project materials (e.g. annual newsletter, project reports, summary finding briefing papers) at key project stages to keep you informed of our work and any upcoming opportunities.

REMCAP will also host two workshops for international collaboration in 2015 to develop expanded working partnerships which enable the project team - and potential new partners - to capitalise on the maritime resource efficiency development and growth opportunities identified over the REMCAP project.

Information about the workshops will be disseminated via the REMCAP LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/grp/home?gid=6526424 and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/remcapproject and also it will also be uploaded to the REMCAP Project website http://www.remcap.eu/project_deliverables/.

Additionally you can register your interest in the REMCAP project and be kept up to date with all the project activities. http://www.remcap.eu/interest/

Innovation Regulation Paradox, Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, 21st May 2015

The Innovation Regulation Paradox taking place at the SMMI, Southampton on 21st May 2015 will explore the way in which regulation and innovation combine and impact to the economic growth of the Marine and Maritime sector.

The event is supported by the British Marine Federation, Hampshire County Council & the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute.

This event will offer a great opportunity to listen, discuss & network with industry experts whilst hearing from a great line up of speakers and live discussion panel.

The way in which regulation and innovation combine is vital to the economic growth of the marine and maritime sector. If regulation is too lax then safety might be comprised. Too tight and it might stifle innovation. Other sectors such as aerospace and automotive are often regarded as being more innovative than marine and maritime.

How have they achieved this?

What can the marine and maritime sector learn from the experiences in aerospace?

Using a series of case studies including composite materials, autonomy, LNG as a marine fuel and emission controls for vessels, this event will demonstrate the relationship between innovation and regulation and consider whether or not the balance is right. If not, how can an optimum balance best be achieved?
