Export Boost for Solent businesses

Two key business support organisations have teamed up to ensure that companies across the Solent will get the best possible help to boost their overseas sales.

Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Government export body UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) South East, have signed an agreement which sets out how the two organisations will work together.

They aim to combine forces to boost the Solent's export performance, improving the turnover and profits of local businesses. This will support UKTI's pledge to get an additional 100,000 UK firms exporting and increasing exports to £1trillion by 2020.

New funding to help small and medium sized engineering firms boost skills

The Government has announced a new funding initiative for small and medium sized engineering firms to help their businesses grow.

The funding forms a part of the government's work to put employers in the driving seat when it comes to skills and support British engineering to grow and compete.

Engineering companies with fewer than 250 employees will be able to apply for a share of the first £2.5 million of a £10 million match funding pot to develop innovative company-specific training.

The funding is simple to apply for and successful bidders can receive their funding offer within less than 5 weeks of applying.

The funding will be more accessible to smaller firms and will see the minimum funding threshold being lowered from £40,000 down to £10,000. Companies will also be able to include staff wage costs as part of their project costs.

Applications will remain open until 27th February 2015, or until funds are allocated.

Arctic IAP project to be presented at Digital Ship conference in Bergen, February 2015

Marine South East associate Nick Lambert will be speaking at the Digital Ship conference in Bergen in February 2015 about whether the Arctic Integrated Situational Awareness Service can add value to operations in the Arctic.

The Arctic Integrated Situational Awareness Service (Developed through the ESA Integrated Applications Promotion) Telespazio VEGA UK and partners are developing a range of value-added services using layers of geo-information and commercial data to provide a fast Integrated Situational Awareness Service to support the expanding economic activities in the Arctic including oil and gas, shipping and tourism.

The service uses space derived data integrated with other information sources and delivered through low bandwidth satellite communications rapidly and directly to the point of need.

The services include primarily satellite derived imagery VMS (24/7 Vessel Monitoring System) from the Telespazio Group, AIS (Automatic Identification System) provided by Canadian consortium member ExactEarth, and a low bandwidth high fidelity image transfer system from AnsuR, a Norwegian company.

Marine South East is providing the project with maritime expertise and access to potential user groups.
