GROW: Offshore Wind launches two Fast-Track funding calls

GROW:Offshore wind has launched two Fast-Track funding calls both of which can help English companies accelerate their offshore wind investment plans over the next 6 months, and create jobs as a result.

Fast Track Funding Call 1 - Capital Investment

The call can offer grants of up to £500k for English SMEs and can support investment in:

* Tangible Assets - land, buildings, plant, machinery, equipment

* Intangible Assets - patents, licences, know-how or other intellectual property

The call is supported by service partner RenewableUK and its' Supply Chain Strategy Group, which brings together representatives of key suppliers and OEMs in the UK offshore wind market.

The call is particularly keen to support larger projects (£50k - £500k grant) because of the beneficial knock-on effects these typically have in the wider supply chain.

Fast Track Funding Call 2 - Investing in Innovation

The call can offer grants of up to £500k for all English companies for investment in innovation projects which will help to create jobs in the offshore wind supply chain. Grants of up to 50% for eligible costs are available to cover costs of Personnel, Instruments and Equipment, Buildings and Land, Materials and consumables and Patents.

The call is supported by both the Knowledge Transfer Network and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult

The call is again keen to support larger projects (£50k +) and also those where grant funding will be used to meet eligible costs of external technology partners - whether educational institutions, technology centres or other companies.

For both funding calls a streamlined approvals process is in place so successful applicants are able to access funding by early November. Companies wishing to submit Expression of Interest Applications should do so by 8th October 2014 for the Capital Investment Fast Track Funding call and 15th October 2014 for the Investing in Innovation Fast Track Funding call.

GLEAMS project concludes Glycerine is a viable, extremely clean alternative marine fuel

After a year of intense activity MSE’s ‘GLEAMS’ (Glycerine Fuel for Marine Sustainability), project has completed. The project consortium have gathered the evidence and conducted the analysis necessary to show that glycerine is a technically feasible very low emissions alternative fuel in the marine market.

Barriers to the adoption of this novel technology have been investigated and options for commercialisation defined.

GLEAMS believe there are many initial niche markets for glycerine fuel that will value its non-toxic, clean burning and safe characteristics and will not be hampered by the current lack of extended supply chains for the fuel. The project consortium are now exploring early marine sector applications for this novel fuel including: Wind Farm Support Vessels; Research and Education Vessels; Military Specialist Craft and Super Yachts.

Additionally the market for Cold Ironing (shore power) is recommended as a special case where subsidies (ROCs) would be available in the UK.

GLEAMS has been particularly successful in overcoming the widely held view that glycerine is unsuitable for use as a fuel due to its physical and chemical properties (it has a negative cetane number). The project has clearly and publicly demonstrated that glycerine can be used as a fuel in compression ignition engines by displaying the GLEAMS emissions test engine running on glycerine for three days during Seawork International 2014.

Aware of the effort required to raise awareness of glycerine as a marine fuel the project has conducted a successful publicity campaign that has attracted worldwide interest. Over 85 press articles have been published including some special features. 127 approved specialists have joined the online 'GLEAMS Interest Group' that will be maintained beyond the end of the project.

To keep informed of any spin-off projects that may develop from the GLEAMS project please join the GLEAMS Interest Group at:
http://groupspaces.com/GLEAMSInterestGroup/

Over the short to medium term the project expects the technology to be adopted, at least on a trial basis in one or more niche markets. Once proven in these early applications take up can be expected to grow organically, allowing for the unknowns of the global fuel market. It is certain that as regulations governing atmospheric emissions from ships become ever tighter, glycerine fuel will meet any envisaged limits on CO2, NOx, sulphur, particulate matter and soot.

GLEAMS is a 'Vessel Efficiency Programme' project, supported by InnovateUK and DSTL.

Marine South East joins with Technopolis for Scottish Enterprise project

Marine South East has been appointed a joint contractor with Technopolis for a project looking at mapping Advanced Manufacturing solutions for energy related applications in harsh environments which is being funded by the Scottish Enterprise.

The project will provide a detailed snapshot across the EU in the niche area of advanced manufacturing for energy applications in harsh environments, with particular emphasis on where Scotland's strengths can be
complemented by similar / related strengths across the EU.

Marine South East will be working with the consultancy group, Technopolis who provide evidence based support to organisations and individuals with a mission to address environmental and societal challenges and achieve economic growth by means of science, technology, innovation and education.

The project will involve putting together:

* An inventory of the relevant infrastructure, research centres (including university research groups with a strong focus in this area), key companies, clusters and
networks across the EU in the niche

* A graphical representation of the European value chain (or network) in Advanced Manufacturing for energy applications in harsh environments, including R&D
services, test houses and providers of specialist materials, components, subsystems and complete solutions

* An overview of key areas of common opportunity (i.e. where the 'match' is strongest) and the barriers which appear to inhibit regions and industry from finding each other (learn/connect) and then working together (demonstrate and upscale).

The project is due to be completed by the end of 2014; for further information please contact Jonathan Williams jw@mseuk.org
