New project to stimulate skills in the marine renewable industry

BEEMS (Building European Environmental and Maritime Skills) is a new European project with the aim to stimulate the development and sustained growth of environmental and maritime skills within the marine renewable energy industry (offshore wind, wave and tidal flow), and to increase the sector’s economic viability through enhanced cross-border co-operation and joint working.

This will be achieved by means of the following strategic objectives:

1. Secure a joint understanding of the commercial commonalities and differences of the cross-border marine renewable energy sector, and its specific requirements for developing and retaining a skilled and ready-for-market workforce that meets short, medium and long term growth in the offshore wind energy industry.

2. Engage with cross-border sector employers and training providers to broker and establish an offshore wind energy industry employment strategy and skills training plan that meets industry needs in skills development, training, apprenticeships and workforce retention.

3. Develop a cross-border offshore wind energy industry skills training and apprenticeship programme that will meet the educational, social and economic needs of unemployed people or those with low level skills.

4. Develop and evaluate cross-border practical approaches and techniques that improve performance and long term employability, including a skills escalator, study trips and exchanges.

5. Enhance opportunities for SME’s in the partnership territories to benefit from the development of the marine renewable energy sector supply chain.

Plans for new Centre of Excellence for Engineering unveiled

Fareham College in Hampshire has lodged a planning application for a new Centre of Excellence for Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Technology (CEMAST) on the Daedalus site.

If approved, the proposed Centre will house open plan engineering workshops, classrooms, a learning resource centre and café, as well as conference and exhibition space for local employers and is scheduled to open in September 2014.

Representing a £12 million investment in engineering skills, the site will provide industry standard training facilities to support manufacturing skills with a focus on aeronautical, marine, electrical, automotive and mechanical engineering. The move is supported by an agreement which sees the College take eight acres of land from the Homes and Communities Agency, which owns much of the Enterprise Zone site.

If the plans are approved, the Centre would provide training for around 400 students in courses ranging from Foundation Level to Higher National Diplomas.

The Centre for Excellence in Engineering and Manufacturing Advanced Skills Training will be the first major development of the newly designated Solent Enterprise Zone at the former HMS Daedalus site in Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire.

Innovation Vouchers from the Technology Strategy Board

The Technology Strategy Board’s national Innovation Voucher scheme is designed to help businesses gain the knowledge
they need to innovate and grow.

An Innovation Voucher can help your business to work with an external expert for the first time by paying towards the cost of their services.

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) are providing Innovation Vouchers for start-up, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to work with 'knowledge suppliers' such as:

* universities and further education colleges
* research and technology organisations
* technical consultancies
* Catapult centres
* design advisers
* Intellectual Property advisers

Innovation Vouchers are available to businesses that are aiming to work on ideas applicable to one of the TSB's priority themes.

Please visit the website at https://vouchers.innovateuk.org to find out what these are.

The Innovation Voucher can enable your business to access knowledge for all types of innovation - for example:

* ideas for new or improved products,processes and services
* using design to improve your ideas
* managing your Intellectual Property.

However, you need to be clear that accessing this knowledge will help your business address a real challenge, not just a small improvement or change to what you currently do. Innovation Vouchers help you to obtain expert advice from a knowledge supplier you haven't worked with before, not to fund general business needs such as training or equipment.

An Innovation Voucher will enable you to work with an external expert for the first time so you can move forward with a particular idea or innovation. It can also be used to help you think through an idea that might lead you to apply for other types of support offered by the Technology Strategy Board.

Applying is simple!

* apply via the Technology Strategy Board's Innovation Voucher web page at https://vouchers.innovateuk.org
* provide details of your business and answer some simple questions about why you want an Innovation Voucher and what you plan to do
* Innovation Vouchers will be allocated by means of a draw from eligible applications. Over 100 Innovation Vouchers will be issued in each round - every three months.

Apply @ https://vouchers.innovateuk.org
The Guidance for Applicants on the website will help you to decide if your project is eligible.

Improved Wave Measurement and Forecasting System and Future Developments, 23rd April 2013, Chilworth, Southampton

This event will present advances in sea-state measurement, data processing and portrayal achieved by the WaveSentry project and will explore technologies and opportunities for further development of wave measurement and maritime forecasting.

Many marine operations are dependent on high quality information on sea-state information, including wave height, period, direction and steepness, for reasons of economics and safety. The information currently available is based on atmospheric/ocean models and lacks sufficient temporal and spatial resolution.

The WaveSentry project has developed a new information and forecasting tool for managing the risks of marine operations. The WaveSentry system exploits a range of available data sources such as real-time buoy and vessel derived wave measurements. It is also designed to accept new data feeds such as from 'satellite reflectometry'.

The WaveSentry project has developed techniques to substantially enhance the integration of diverse data sources, in order to offer improved sea-state data to multiple end-user markets and enhance existing meteorological and oceanographic forecasting products.

Objectives of event:
