Gosport's HMS Daedalus site to become an Enterprise Zone

The Government has announced that the former HMS Daedalus site near Gosport, is to become the first Enterprise Zone in the South. The site was recently earmarked for marine, aviation and aerospace use in the Local Plan.

Enterprise Zone designation will mean that the site will benefit from business rate discounts, simplified planning rules and investment in the site’s infrastructure, in an effort to encourage businesses in and bring thousands of jobs to the area.

Sean Woodward, who helped form the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership and is also Fareham Borough Council leader, said: 'There are some significant financial breaks for businesses that move on to the site that means there is the potential for a full rebate of business rates for five years while they get established up to the value of about £250,000 a year.

The other financial bonus is that the growth in business generated on the site will be able to be held locally. That growth will be used to invest in the infrastructure for the site.'

Solent LEP successful in gaining start-up funding

The recently launch Solent LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) has been successful in its bid to receive £95,000 start up funding from the Government.

Doug Morrison, Solent LEP Chairman commented;

"I am delighted that we have been successful in our bid to the LEP Start-Up Fund. This Start-Up money will be used to establish the Solent LEPs operational capacity so that it is robust enough to ensure we are in a strong and sustainable position to deliver for the Solent.

Part of the money will also be used to develop a full business plan for the LEP. This will allow us to build on the initial information gained at our launch event consultation and determine where we can make the biggest impact for the Solent business community."

Ports lobby for level playing field for cruise terminals

A number of UK ports have raised their concerns over a Government precedent that appears to be upsetting the level playing field for cruise sector turnarounds.

Marine South East is also concerned about the action which could act as a disincentive to future private sector investment in cruise terminals.

For companies wishing to express their concern there is a petition website set up at:

Talent Retention Scheme attracts growing number of SME's

The recently announced Talent Retention Solution (TRS), is a new national web based system which helps match skilled employees facing redundancy to UK companies (including SME's) in growing sectors of advanced manufacturing and engineering who are recruiting.

The new scheme has been attracting growing numbers of SME's signing up to the initiative.

Marine South East, working with Winchester Consulting are key partners in delivering this initiative for marine companies.

The easy to use system comes as a result of work undertaken by the Skills and Jobs Retention Group (SJRG) to support the advanced engineering manufacturing sector - engineers who may be struggling to find work in today's difficult economic climate.

Manufacturing and engineering companies which have already signed up to the system and who are recruiting over the coming year include Rolls Royce (1000), Siemens (500), Nissan (200) and Airbus (600). Supply chain companies will also be able to use the system for redeployment and recruitment.

New standards for marine diesel fuel - downloadable guide

The IMarEST Small Ships Group has dealt firmly and decisively with considerable concern and confusion raised in the industry by EU Directive 30/2009/EC; the requirement to add biofuel content to gas oil and reduce sulphur content. A major conference was held at Greenwich last October to address the shortcomings of the DfT's limited and inadequate consultation.

The results have been considered carefully by the DFT for the UK legislation enacting the Directive.

This intervention has helped raise the awareness of oil companies and distributors.

A 20 page booklet (£10) about the new standards is available to download from

Can India help you expand your business?

A new service has been launched by the UK India Business Council to help UK SME's enter the Indian Market.

Its well known that entering new markets is never an easy option but the case for export is equally compelling. According to the UKTI, firms that export increase their productivity by 35 per cent in the first year alone; they achieve stronger financial performance and are more likely to stay in business.

UKIBC is a new service which will provide intelligence, events, reports, and create "communities" linking large and small companies around new business opportunities in six key sectors in India.

The aim is to help UK firms understand the market, identify business opportunities and connect with potential partners. Sector members also get exclusive access to an online B2B hub to connect with Indian and UK businesses.

UKIBC will be hosting a series of events where members will have the opportunity to meet with leading speakers and India experts. Delegates will be able to network, meet other businesses and gain exclusive access to incoming businesses from India.

Plans are also underway to take a delegate of small and medium sized businesses to India in October to explore partnerships with Indian companies.
