What is next for the Maritime Supply Chain in the Solent? 14th June 2011, Southampton

Southampton Management School evening seminar.
18:00 - 20:00 14th June 2011.

The supply chain mapping project for the businesses having an interest in the Maritime sector in the wider Solent region has produced a map of opportunities to aim for and identified some needed developments to make success possible.

This seminar will be led by the team that did the mapping and they will present and discuss the results of the project and promote discussions about what can be done next.

The total spend identified was £560 million for sales of £1.9 Billion, in over 500 companies employing 19,000 people but not enough of the money stayed in the region and that is where the opportunities lie. There are real market opportunities to be aimed for in the region and we want to help make that happen.

Part of the seminar will be to discuss a particular programme of business focused Supply Chain Improvement workshops which will be run after the summer break. These are designed to help companies identify their emerging Supply Chain Strategies to target these business opportunities and to define and plan an implementation path in the months ahead.

Seminar: Offshore Wind in the UK, 16 June 2011, London

On Thursday 16 June, the Danish Embassy in London is hosting a seminar that offers an insight to developments in UK offshore wind – with a focus on Round 3 and the opportunities this is creating for companies in the supply chain. The event, being held at the Danish Embassy, will bring together the Danish and UK industry.

Come and hear from The Crown Estate, Ofgem, Eneco UK, Vattenfall, Vestas Offshore, Siemens Energy and others.

The UK is presently the best market for offshore wind energy in the world due to its favourable combination of wind resources, strong offshore regime and the extension of the relevant legislation, the Renewables Obligation, to 15% by 2015.

Round 3 will develop across nine zones and the capacity of the leases issued is 32 GW. Together with Rounds 1 and 2, the addition of Round 3 will mean that over 45GW of sites are currently being brought forward in the UK.

Boatbuilding with Composite Materials: Safe, Sustainable and Smart, 30th June 2011, Southampton

Thu 30 Jun 2011 - Chilworth Manor, Southampton

This year's boatbuilding event aims to address some issues that are relevant to boat builders of all shapes and sizes.

Safety in the workplace is increasingly regulated and important. Is styrene emission the real issue? What are the simple steps to reduce hazardous material usage and show that you are dealing with other workplace hazards?

Sustainability is becoming a 'must have' in any company's public profile. It affects the way your business is viewed by your local authorities and community, your supply chain partners as well as your clients. To what extent are your products and processes 'sustainable'? And what should you be doing to get that message across.

How does sustainability impact the leisure marine sector? Is it realistic to use bio-derived materials or thermoplastics? What happens to end-of life-boats, not to mention process waste? How can we reduce our impact on the environment? Will being more sustainable cost us more, or will it actually save money?

What new technologies will make a splash in boatbuilding in future years? We will look at some smart technology from passively adaptive composites to self-sensing sails.

This event will suggest some answers to these questions and stimulate thought and discussion as to ways we can make safer, more pleasant and less wasteful working environments, and more sustainable boats, as well as what help is available to boat builders to achieve these changes.

This event is organised by Materials KTN in partnership with British Marine Federation, Composites UK and Marine South East.

Registration fee: £75 or £40 if you are a member of one or more of the supporting organisations. Membership of Materials KTN is free at http://www.materialsktn.net
