Welcome to the July edition of Marine South East email news

Welcome to the July 2010 edition of email news which is sent to marine businesses in the South East of England.

This edition includes an important survey that we are asking all recipients to complete to have your say about future business support for marine companies in the region. The survey takes less than 5 minutes to complete and will form an important submission to Ministers who are deciding now on future business support programmes.

If you have any articles that you would like to be considered for submission please email admin@marinesoutheast.co.uk

Survey to streamline future business support - please assist us by completing this online survey

As you may well have read in the press, the new Government is rethinking how and to what extent it should support business expansion and wealth creation. Marine South East believe this is absolutely the right thing to be doing now, to ensure that every pound of tax-payers' expenditure on business support ultimately helps companies to prosper and grow.

Marine South East are asking all newsletter subscribers to participate in an on-line survey, which comprises 6 simple check-box questions and will take less than 5 minutes to complete.

http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/survey/

Your answers will contribute to an analysis of the barriers to business growth, and if/how those barriers could best be tackled through business support in future. The aggregated results will be presented in a summary report which we will submit to key Ministers, MPs and Councillors, and of course publish on our website.

Marine South East has met with many hundreds of marine businesses, so we know that some support measures in the past have been considered unnecessary or wasteful, while others have proved to be effective.

Company directors and managers have a crucial role to play in shaping the support that is offered to them, and we want to make sure that marine businesses have a major influence, in line with our industry's importance to many local economies.

The retrenchment of public expenditure now underway presents a rare opportunity to focus business support onto priority measures that really can make a difference. We need your feedback to help define these priorities, and to recommend if/how these could best be delivered. The credibility of the survey will depend entirely on the number of businesses participating in it, so please have your say, and complete the survey now by following the link below.

TIME cross-border collaboration project announces its key programme sectors

A new cross-border project that will encourage businesses to share innovation, technology and supply chain logistics is being launched under the title of TIME.

Transferring Innovation for Maritime Economy (TIME) is an INTERREG IVA project supported by the European Regional Development Fund that will operate across the geographical regions of South East England, Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France and Flanders.

Managed by three international partners - Marine South East, Aditec Pas-de-Calais and Innotek - the TIME project plans to improve the development of sustainable, innovative products and services by encouraging enterprises in the three regions to work together.

Richard Barron, of Marine South East notes, "By co-operating, between themselves and with knowledge institutions, small to medium sized local marine enterprises within these regions will be able to bring products to market faster and more easily and will gain significant competitive advantage so that all three regions will benefit from an improved maritime economy."

The first task for the TIME project team was to carry out a full market analysis of the maritime market sectors represented by each geographical region. Using detailed statistics, market research and sector overviews, three industry sectors have been identified as being the most beneficial for the regions and have been announced as Maritime Security and Logistics; Renewable Energies; and Fisheries.

The TIME project is estimated to run until January 2012, and in that period, it will help any enterprise, research establishment, technology centre, academic institution or entrepreneur to find the right partners to work with to develop products and services, or find a route to market for innovations and new technologies.

One of TIME's objectives will be to help manage participant matching, which will be done through personal contact, the TIME website, e-news communication, and publicity.

Companies, knowledge institutions or individuals involved in the development of innovative products or services that would like to become involved in the TIME project are encouraged to contact their regional partner representatives.

Offshore Wind: Packed audience at Seawork hears about Supply Chain Opportunities for marine companies

The renewable energy industry offers a multitude of supply chain opportunities for marine businesses. At Seawork 2010, Marine South East and Envirobusiness ran a workshop bringing together influential players in the offshore wind sector and presented examples of successful case studies to communicate the important timelines, challenges and opportunities for marine companies looking to get ahead in an industry with exponential growth projections.

The demand for clarity, insight and knowledge sharing was clearly evident as over 100 information-hungry marine professionals crammed themselves into the show conference room.

"We were delighted with the attendance and interactivity of the workshop," commented Richard Barron, Marine South East. "Renewable UK estimate that the capital investment in offshore wind, in the UK alone, will exceed £65Bn by 2020, add to this the potential in operations and maintenance which could be worth as much as £1.6Bn per annum and you have an industry that could create 60,000 jobs for generations to come, reinvigorate our manufacturing sector and open up new export markets which is why it is so important that this opportunity for the marine industry is urgently seized upon and strongly supported at all levels before it is lost forever."

Addressing some of the protocols and key opportunities, Adrian Fox, Supply Chain Manager of The Crown Estate detailed the growth of the industry, the supply chain process and the commanding position of the UK within the sector.

Real-life case studies from companies actively involved in UK and international projects included details about the construction of the London Array wind farm; a 175 turbine project located more than 12 miles off the Kent coast in the outer Thames Estuary. Solent Composite Systems and Gardline Geosciences Ltd also presented details of involvement from supplier and buyer viewpoint.

To download a copy of the presentations from the event please go to http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/docs/papers/

Marine South East wrapped up the session introducing the new TIME project, a European cross-border project encouraging co-operation and collaboration between companies and research organisations in the regions of Nord Pas-de-Calais in France, South-East England and Flanders in Belgium. The project focuses on three maritime sectors including security and logistics, fishing and renewable energy, reinforcing once more the opportunity and interest in this burgeoning industry.

Sunshine and winners for Schools Marine Challenge South East Race Day

Schools and Colleges from across the South East Region met once again to compete in the 5th annual Schools Marine Challenge Race Day on Thursday, 24th June 2010 at Bluewater, Kent.

Supported by the Hampshire Economic Partnership, British Marine Federation, Techsoft and hosted by the Bluewater Shopping Centre, the day was a great success with staff and pupils enjoying great sunshine and close boat racing.

The day was filled with varied racing with vessels competing in three power categories: Solar; Electric; and Internal Combustion. Teams of pupils design and construct their boats, often as part of their curricular studies culminating in the ultimate challenge to test their skills and boats against other schools.

For the first time competitors were joined by pupils from local primary schools who experienced 'Formula Sun' building their very own solar boats. The primary school students showed excellent team effort building their boats from build guides, designing stickers with Techsoft and the racing their finished craft in just a few hours! All had an enjoyable time and the pupils of Knockhall County Primary School left with big smiles having collected their first trophy.

Overall the South East Race Champions 2010 were the Leigh Academy, Dartford, Kent who repeated their success of previous years. The school designs its curriculum around events such as the Schools Marine Challenge and believes they encourage the students to be innovative, work hard and learn practical skills. The Academy's recent Ofsted inspection highlighted its particular success in preparing youngsters for the world of work and its reputation ensures a high demand for pupil places.

Bishop Luffa C of E School from Chichester won the Solar Powered Category with an effective design which was much admired by other teams. The vessel was significantly faster than other competitors even in overcast conditions. After the final race the team admitted that they didn't want brilliant sunshine as they were still perfecting the trim of the craft and a very fast run would have buried the bow and slowed the boat!

Formula Sun will achieve another first in January 2011 when the British Marine Federation will be hosting a National Solar Race Day for UK schools at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show. If you know a school which would like to participate or your company would like to support the Challenge further details can be obtained from: http://www.engineeringyourfuture.com/page17.html

South East Regional Ports Group meeting report June 2010

On 22 June 2010 a special meeting of the South East Regional Ports Group was held in London to discuss the role of ports with respect to the development of offshore renewable energy projects, including offshore wind farms, floating wind turbines, tidal range, tidal stream and wave energy.

With particular regard to offshore wind a number of South East ports are already providing services to the developers of Round 1 and Round 2 sites, and the announcement of the developers for the two Round 3 sites off the South Coast has opened further opportunities for ports in construction, operations and maintenance support for these installations.

The discussion noted that ports were key nodes in bringing the economic benefits to the UK, and that they needed to work with others to present a package to developers that also addressed issues such as a skilled workforce, training opportunities and the setting up of a robust supply chain.

It was also noted that facilities developed in the first instance for offshore wind applications might have a longer life as the emerging technologies of tidal and wave energy devices begin to be widely installed.

The Regional Ports Group comprises representatives from all the main commercial ports in the South East area. On this occasion they were joined by representatives from Government departments including speakers for DECC, DEFRA, DfT, GOSE and the South East England Partnership Board, together with The Crown Estate, Envirobusiness and Marine South East.

The meeting was hosted by the British Ports Association and these meetings are facilitated on behalf of SEEDA by Howard Holt of Marine South East, from whom further information on the group can be obtained; though it should be noted that commercial presentations are not made during these events as they generally deal with policy, planning and strategic issues.

New South East facility undertakes £1M refit on Superyacht

Southampton-based ship repairer, Testbank, has successfully completed a £1 million pound refit on a Superyacht at the newly established Trafalgar Wharf facilities at Portchester.

Testbank Ship Repair spent three months renewing the £44 million luxury superyacht 'Senses', on charter to a New Zealand brewery tycoon.

The bulk of the refit was done at Testbank’s ship repair facility at Trafalgar Wharf, Portchester using the company’s 1,000 tonne Rolls Royce syncrolift, one of the biggest of its kind in the South of England. Final checks and trials were completed at Southampton Docks.

Testbank Managing Director Jason Coltman said: “It is without doubt the biggest yacht we have ever worked on in Portsmouth. The skipper and the owners’ representative were over the moon with both the facility and the Testbank staff and were delighted that everything went so well.”

The Trafalgar Wharf company, led by Managing Director Jonny Boys, has been developing the ex-Vosper Thornycroft site over the past two years with the aim of creating a world-class marine centre.

Application forms are available from Kate Roper at SEEDA ( kateroper@seeda.co.uk ) These should be completed jointly by the industrial and university partners and submitted to SEEDA by the industrial partner.

Applicants who have submitted applications through other funding routes are welcome to apply to SEEDA, as long as they meet SEEDA's eligibility requirements.

SEEDA requires additional information to assist its panel in evaluating the submitted proposals. The application forms for SEEDA awards therefore consist of the EPSRC Central Pool forms and an additional SEEDA specific form. The SEEDA form has been designed as a supplement to provide opportunities for you to elaborate on key details to be brought to the attention of the SEEDA panel. We will not forward any of the information submitted to SEEDA on to the EPSRC.

Please complete the forms in ink or electronically by computer. All application forms must be signed. Email submissions of scanned signed forms to kateroper@seeda.co.uk will be accepted.

Applications will be judged upon on a number of criteria, including:
* The benefits of the project to the student and their personal development
* The partnership demonstrating a benefit to the South East through the Company being based within the region
* The partnership being able to demonstrate that suitable and acceptable resources are in place to aid the completion of the project
* The potential benefits of the project to science and the benefits to the business economy of that particular sector;
* How the project will advance any existing technology.

Eligibility
The company, not the University, is expected to take the lead in defining and setting up the research project. When considering companies for eligibility under this scheme, the core requirements outlined in the EPSRC forms apply. For SEEDA awards, we shall be looking in particular for the following:

* under 250 employees within the company or group;
* turnover of less than 50 million euro and a balance sheet total of not more than 43 million euro
