Have your say; Solent Maritime Integration Project - seeking the views of marine businesses in the Solent region

The Solent Maritime Integration Project is a piece of research being undertaken to produce a database and supply chain map that will pinpoint the activities and relationships of the Solent's maritime economy.

To make the project as successful as possible marine businesses are being asked to take part in a short online survey. The more organsations that take part in the survey to become part of the supply chain map, the more powerful the tool will become.

The closing date to submit information via the survey is the end of May 2010 with an executive summary due to be circulated to those who take part once the results have been collated.

Please follow the link below for more information about the project, and to take part in the survey to be part of the map:

Wind of Coast (WICO) update

Marine South East continues to work with the Italian and Spanish partners towards a set of guidelines to assist public authorities, businesses and members of the public understand the policy, planning, economics and technology involved with small wind turbines.

The UK has the best wind resources in Europe and is in the forefront of the small wind energy business. It is home to a number of leading manufacturers who achieved a 45.4% growth in export market revenues in 2009. Since 1 April 2010 the small wind industry has been boosted by the new Feed-In Tariff (FIT) scheme that offers generous rewards for electricity generated using a range of technologies. Energy from small wind systems is now particularly attractive for businesses situated in windy coastal locations.

The key issue for any wind turbine will always be 'location, location, location' and the quality of the available wind resource, however the FIT scheme dramatically reduces pay-back times and makes more installation sites potentially profitable. The FIT scheme pays a generous tariff for all the electricity generated from renewable sources. For example, wind turbines of less than 1.5KW rated output attract a tariff of 34.5p per kWh, index linked for 20 years. Any surplus electricity exported to the grid attracts an additional 3p/kWh.

Obtaining planning permission for small wind systems should soon be simplified with the overdue introduction of 'General Permitted Development Orders' (GPDO).

As many of the most favourable sites for small wind turbines are in coastal locations MSE is hosting a workshop to explain the relevant issues surrounding small wind systems to an audience of marine businesses. This event is being held in partnership with Envirobusiness during the Seawork 2010 exhibition in Southampton. Wind energy opportunities and the marine sector: 17th June 2010 Seawork

Marine South East will be partnering with Envirobusiness to host two workshops at this year's Seawork Exhibition on Thursday 17th June 2010.

The morning workshop will look at the opportunities for marine companies in the Offshore Wind Energy Sector with the afternoon workshop concentrating on the opportunities for marine businesses presented by Onshore small scale wind installations.

The morning Offshore Wind workshop will aim to highlight the supply chain opportunities for the marine sector offered by offshore wind development in the UK and specifically the Round 3 Offshore Wind Procurement. Speakers from The Crown Estate, London Array, Vattenfall and Gardline will outline the opportunities for marine companies in the Round 3 Offshore Wind Procurement programme. Representatives from Marine South East and Envirobusiness will also be on hand to discuss timelines, challenges and opportunities for marine companies.

The afternoon workshop will look at the opportunities for marine businesses to engage in the small scale onshore wind energy sector.

The new UK system of Feed-In Tariffs for renewable energy generation, developments in planning regulations and technological developments are making small wind turbines increasingly attractive. This workshop will highlight relevant policies and planning regulations, set out the economic case for 'small wind' and examine some of the technologies on offer. Small scale wind power will be of particular interest to marine businesses located in windy coastal locations such as marinas, ports and shipyards.

Details for both events are currently being finalised and will be available for booking online shortly. If you would like to register your interest in the meantime please email admin@marinesoutheast.co.uk specifying which event you are interested in attending.

Cash support to help develop marine businesses

The Manufacturing Advisory Service is currently offering up to £1,250 of matched funding towards specialist services to support businesses in this region.

If you produce, assemble or manufacture a product then we may be able to help support your manufacturing improvement aspirations.

The Manufacturing Advisory Service are looking to assist programmes of work that can demonstrate added value to business. These programmes will include some form of third party external specialist support, bringing additional knowledge or skills (possibly temporarily) to your business, and it is this external support that MAS-SE has limited funding to help finance.

his support strictly excludes purchase of plant and equipment; though associated training/technical support is acceptable.

Examples of support that could be eligible for funding include:

* Process or product design & development and/or introduction
* Sourcing supplies, services or equipment
* Supply base development
* Scientific or technological skills development
* Engineering research into advanced products and processes
* Improved resource efficiency
* Reduced environmental impact
* Lean and Green programmes
* Developing a medium to long term manufacturing strategy

Short Sea Container Shipping Services – The Green Economic Alternative to Ro-Ro

The Port of Poole and MSE are the UK partners in the European PROPOSSE project http://www.proposse.eu/proposse/ whose aim is to promote short sea shipping as a reliable and economic alternative to current means of goods transportation.

Having completed an analysis of existing and potential freight flows through Poole, MSE and the Port of Poole are now undertaking a market survey to investigate the views of potential customers (freight forwarders and SMEs) to the developments of a short sea container shipping service to European ports.

Short sea container shipping services through the Port of Poole offer many advantages to shippers wishing to move goods between the UK and mainland Europe.

* Short sea container vessels can utilise smaller ports, do not require a deep water berth and are more flexible in their ports of destination, reducing road distances for the final leg of the journey.
* Using the smaller ports could cut out the time spent waiting for a berth, which for deep water ports can be frustratingly long.
* The ships are far less complex than RoRo freight ships, and can be manned with smaller crew numbers. This means cheaper capital cost and running costs.
* There is good access to the Port of Poole via roads that bypass the town itself.
* There is a rail connection to the heart of the port.
* Loading and unloading of lorries is very quick compared with the major deep water ports, with turn-around times measured in minutes rather than hours.
* Port of Poole will make arrangements with continental port authorities and shipping lines to ensure smooth handling of containers with clear service performance indicators.
* Geographically, the Port of Poole is at least 20 miles (45 km) closer to Birmingham and Manchester than Dover. Poole offers particular advantages to shippers from the West of England.
* Port of Poole offers a multimodal route from the UK to Western France, Spain and Portugal which could save hundreds of road miles.

If you are interested in the possibility of new shipping routes to Europe from Poole we would value your views.

Marine Energy Resources, Exploitation and Use - project update

MEREX (Marine Energy Resources, Exploitation & Use) is part of SEEDA’s Knowledge Network Programme that creates new collaborations between businesses and knowledge base organisations. The KNP currently supports 7 networks, each focused on specific priority technologies.

MEREX is bringing together universities, research establishments, regulatory bodies and businesses to exploit research opportunities and catalyse collaboration. The primary aim of the network is to turn knowledge into commercially successful products and services.

MEREX will also help members secure additional project funding by assisting with partnership building and bid development.

MEREX is facilitating three 'Industry Groups' to explore the feasibility of novel developments in growth markets:

1. Hybrid marine propulsion & auxiliary systems benefiting from use of renewable energy resources (to help meet 10% renewable energy target for transport by 2020)

2. Port facilities to valorise waste streams and other renewable resources to reduce energy consumption and emissions around ports

3. Ship decision-support & data assimilation systems to minimise fuel use and optimise operation of wind-assisted propulsion

The kick-off meetings for these three groups are now being planned, if you wish to participate please register with MEREX at http://merex.co.uk where you will be prompted to supply some basic information about your organisation and indicate which industry groups you are interested in.
