UK Marine Industries Chart Course for 2020

Marine industries need to pull together to be able to exploit global opportunities for the sector. This was the message from Ian Lucas, Minister for Business last week when he issued a call to action to the UK marine industries to collaborate on their common goal of strengthening this sector’s global market position over the next 10 years.

As co-chair of the Marine Industries Leadership Council (MILC), a joint Government and industry body, the Minister, Ian Lucas launched the UK Marine Industries Strategic Framework.

The MILC's vision for 2020, as set out in the framework, sees the UK marine industry:

* Exploiting its opportunities for growth
* Strengthening its international reputation
* Maintaining its competitive position globally

Commenting at the launch the Minister said, "The UK's Marine sector is a big contributor to our economy, but without industries joining up we can only get so far. Government, industry and stakeholders must all work together to maximise the sector's full potential.

"The challenge for the UK Marine Industries over the next ten years is to continue to build and maintain this diverse, world class sector and ensure it plays a key role in our future advanced manufacturing and low carbon economy. This framework sets the pathway to achieving this, but this vision can only become reality by the work of a committed, unified sector."

The Marine Industries Leadership Council (MILC) analysis of the marine business environment has identified a number of significant drivers for change, including increased globalisation, shifts in supply chain, competitive pressures, environmental and safety issues.

Solent Maritime Integration Project : survey and workshop

The Solent Maritime Integration Project is an exciting new project to engage businesses and enterprises in the Solent to develop and build a supply chain map to facilitate economic development and improvements for the Solent Maritime area.

The Solent Maritime Integration Project (MIP) is building a picture of supply chain and procurement opportunities presented by the ports, harbours and logistics sector. The project was launched last month and Marine South East believes it could offer significant benefits to marine companies in terms of:

* Highlighting opportunities for SE businesses to supply goods and services currently imported from further afield
* Identifying potential for marine companies to diversify into the ports, harbours & logistics supply chains

In addition, the project will enhance the profile of the maritime industry through a better understanding of its economic impact.

Organisations (whatever their size, in the Solent Region) are being asked to complete a simple on-line survey which will then entitle them to a place on the supply chain map.

All survey participants will receive an executive report of the main findings of the project and the opportunity to engage with future Solent Maritime developments.

To participate in the survey please visit http://www.solentmip.com

In addition MSE is co-hosting with the University of Southampton Business School a free workshop on 28th April 2010, in Southampton, where companies will learn how they can benefit from the project. Further details will be confirmed shortly but in the meantime please register your interest by booking your place now.

Wind energy opportunities and the marine sector: 17th June 2010 Seawork

Marine South East will be partnering with Envirobusiness to host two workshops at this year's Seawork Exhibition on Thursday 17th June 2010.

The morning workshop will look at the opportunities for marine companies in the Offshore Wind Energy Sector with the afternoon workshop concentrating on the opportunities for marine businesses presented by Onshore small scale wind installations.

The morning Offshore Wind workshop will aim to highlight the supply chain opportunities for the marine sector offered by offshore wind development in the UK and specifically the Round 3 Offshore Wind Procurement. Speakers from The Crown Estate, London Array, Vattenfall and Gardline will outline the opportunities for marine companies in the Round 3 Offshore Wind Procurement programme. Representatives from Marine South East and Envirobusiness will also be on hand to discuss timelines, challenges and opportunities for marine companies.

The afternoon workshop will look at the opportunities for marine businesses to engage in the small scale onshore wind energy sector.

The new UK system of Feed-In Tariffs for renewable energy generation, developments in planning regulations and technological developments are making small wind turbines increasingly attractive. This workshop will highlight relevant policies and planning regulations, set out the economic case for 'small wind' and examine some of the technologies on offer. Small scale wind power will be of particular interest to marine businesses located in windy coastal locations such as marinas, ports and shipyards.

Details for both events are currently being finalised and will be available for booking online shortly. If you would like to register your interest in the meantime please email admin@marinesoutheast.co.uk specifying which event you are interested in attending.

European Wind of the Coast project launched

A new 'Wind of the Coast' (WICO) European project has been launched with partners from the UK, Italy and Spain looking at the use of small scale wind energy systems to harness wind power from around our coasts. The project is part of the European Union inter-regional program; Interreg IVC Power Program aimed at lowering carbon economies.

The project is being led by the Province of Ravenna in Italy together with partners Marine South East from the UK and the Diputacion Provincial de Huelva in Andalucia in Spain. The project will run until September 2011 and has attracted funding of over Euro200,000.

The aim of the project is to enable the installation of small wind systems along coastlines by identifying barriers to their use and producing tools and guidelines to overcome these barriers.

The first phase of the project, which is underway, will acquire the data necessary to decide which design of wind turbines are most suited to coastal wind conditions in order that prototypes can be installed for performance evaluation in further phases of the project.

For more information about the WICO project please visit http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/wico and to subscribe to receive the free newsletters please visit http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/wico/subscribe

Echopilot image

Marine electronics company benefits from Marine Technology Skills project

Ringwood based marine electronics manufacturer, Echopilot recently took part in Marine South East's Technology Skills Programme (TSP) and benefited from a host of contacts and assistance to address their technical training needs.

Echopilot were keen for the initiative to look at “Hardware Design” training along with how the project might support their innovation and investment programme into 3D sonar technology. It was clear from Susan Phillips, Director at Echopilot that the Technology Skills Programme ‘industry specific’ focus was appealing and better understood the company’s needs than some other initiatives, which are more about what’s on offer and too supply led.

Commenting on the project, Susan Phillips from Echopilot said "The Technology Skills Programme listened and understood our business needs and what we wanted to achieve and directed us to the right people. As a result we have the right contacts to develop our plans for innovation and have funded support to assist with our training as well. We have mixed reviews and experiences of other initiatives but this one certainly seems to have worked for us. As a result we now stand a reasonable chance of achieving profits and more investment opportunities to develop our company even further."

Apart form providing the CWeb job placement vacancy database system the Technology Skills Programme is about connecting employers, especially SMEs, with the right people to get things done. It is also about linking up with other public sector funded programmes to support industry.

The training, skills and public sector investment framework for employers, is often incomprehensible. The Technology Skills Programme aims to make sense of this jointly with employers and introduce them to opportunities that are out there!

The Technology Skills Programme is being driven by Marine South East and the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium. It is part of a growing initiative to retain talent in the aerospace, space, marine and defence industry across the South East and seeks to improve engagement and public sector investment opportunities to industry.

Managing our coastal waters initiative (EMSAC) update

An International consortium of marine capability clusters called EMSAC (of which Marine South East is a partner) met at the recent Oceanology International (OI) conference for a workshop and networking event.

The day was hosted by Marine South East, SEEDA, Pole Mer Bretagne (France) and Pole Mer PACA (France).

The EMSAC consortium focuses on the need for coastal waters to be monitored and protected from risks as a result of the increased value of marine resources for renewable energy, living resources, materials and recreation.

The EMSAC project aims to develop an action plan looking at challenges and opportunities in marine renewable energy, coastal monitoring, risks from sea level rise and resource mapping.

Around 20 delegates attended the workshop event held in March at OI and a further 60 delegates attended the networking reception also held at OI.

If you would like to receive more information about the EMSAC project please contact Simon Powell at simon@marinesoutheast.co.uk
