Young people’s interest in engineering and the marine industry was proven again this year with a second successful Schools Marine challenge. Many schools have worked all year on their designs, and their efforts paid off with some fantastic craft that achieved above and beyond last year’s entries.

Marenet event focuses on the role of ports in the South East...
On the 10th July, the theme was ports and overseas investment at the first of two Marenet events held last month. Doug Morrison, Port Director at ABP Southampton made an excellent presentation to the audience, with insight into where the port has come from and their vision for expansion in the future. The presentation included interesting facts about the growth of the port; the different areas of the business – Cars, Cruises, Containers, Fruit and cargo.

Green issues top the agenda at July Marenet event...
Premier Marina at Swanwick played host to the second Marenet event in July, an event which proved to be extremely popular, with delegates attending to hear about the latest news on the topical issue of the environment.

RACINE project visit Dover...
The latest Anglo-French meeting of the Marine South East led RACINE project was held in Dover on 19 July. The project was generously hosted by Dover Harbour in their historic board room where historic figures such as the Duke of Wellington and William Pitt once presided as chairman.

Solent Marine Community update...
Marine South East is pleased to have been awarded funds by Southampton Partnership to take forward Phase II of the Solent Marine Community (SMC) project, which will run until 31st March 2008 and will build on some of the work previously undertaken by Southampton Enterprise Hub.

Weather didn’t dampen spirits at this year’s Schools Marine Challenge...
Schools from across the South East took part in this year’s Schools Marine Challenge on 3rd July, bracing themselves against thunder, lightening and torrential downpours. But their spirits weren’t dampened as they competed to win prizes for themselves and their schools.

SE-Women is a project designed to release the untapped potential of women who are under-utilised in the workforce. By investing in supporting women so that they are better represented in senior management roles and progress in their careers, the project seeks to contribute to the overall productivity and competitiveness of the South East of England.

The BA Peters Bursary of £2,000 is awarded each year to an individual who is keen to develop as a Manager within the industry. AMSI gives Evidence to Science and Technology Committee...
The House of Commons' Science and Technology Committee is currently holding a series of evidence sessions under the topic 'Investigating the Oceans'. The Association of Marine Scentific Industries was invited to give verbal evidence, following a written submission, on 13 June alongside The Institution of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, The Society of Underwater Technologies, and the Engineering Physical Sciences research Council.
