Maritime Research and Innovation UK (MarRI-UK) are excited to announce their second webinar as part of a new series showcasing new research and technologies across the maritime sector.

'Nuclear Propulsion for Merchant Ships' will take place this December 10th, 14:00-15:00, Online Webinar

The global shipping industry is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters globally, if the industry were a country, it would rank as the sixth largest emitter.  With increasing attention being given to  greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear power is a potential solution for merchant ships propulsion.  International navies have a good safety record with over 500 nuclear propelled warships and submarines built over the last 60 years.  A recent study estimated that if around 7,000 of the world’s largest ships were propelled using nuclear power, carbon missions for the entire merchant shipping industry would halve.

Chaired by MarRI-UK Strategic Advisor, Professor John Hudson and speakers from CORE POWER and Lloyd's Register this webinar aims to bring attendees up to date with the latest thinking on potential reactor plant solutions suitable for ship propulsion plant, the challenges associated with regulation and safe operation and consideration of some of the potential obstacles to more widespread adoption.
