Innovate UK has announced the launch of Battery Innovation Round 1, a new funding competition delivered in partnership with the Department of Trade. 

The competition will invest up to £20 million in innovation projects to strengthen the UK battery sector.

The competition funding aims to:

• Accelerate the development and commercialisation of cutting-edge battery technologies
• Support the UK battery supply chain and related industries
• Enhance UK competitiveness in global markets
• Demonstrate battery technologies for diverse applications

The competition is open to collaborative projects only, across two strands:

• Concept development (£500k-£4m, 1-3 years)
• Feasibility studies (£70k-£500k, 6-18 months)

The competition opened 23rd October 2025; the briefing event is 29th October 2025, a Q&A surgery event is on 5th November 2025 and the competition closes 17th December 2025 (11am).
